As a teacher, I'm treated as a valued employee. I can go to my administrator with concerns and suggestions. The overall administration of the district has been greatly improved in the last six years. Before Peter Hilts came on, it seemed like D49 had to pay a golden parachute every two years to another superintendent that they fired.

The only big problem d49 has is over crowding. Even at the elementary schools, schools tend to be quite large (four or five sections of a grade level in one school). For students, that means they might only have music, art, PE once a week. At my school, some grades have music once every six school days. There are two elementary schools that are currently being built to help the over crowding, but with the continued home building in Meridian Ranch, who knows how long it will be until we need another elementary school to the east.

The school calendar is what drew me to D49 in the first place. On Aug. 1 I will complain bitterly that I'll have a class to teach, but the two week breaks in October and March really do make up for it. It is very nice to take a week long vacation and still have another week to get stuff done.

I have heard that D20 doesn't treat teachers as well as D49. In fact, I know of three d20 principals that came to D49 and several teachers. I'm a music teacher and I have a smart board, computer system, sound system, etc...

The before/after school care, I don't know much about, but I thought d49 staff was given a free hour everyday.... The schools recently changed from one company to another, so that might be a change in price.

As far as "being out there," there is quite a bit of commercial building coming to the Falcon area. There is a proposed King Soopers and other fast food. The drive to Powers isn't terrible (I make it everyday), then again, I am going the opposite way of most traffic.

Thanks for info! Very helpful!!
