Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Country Music's Hall Of Fame Is Honoring Three More

Posted 04-12-2017 at 08:17 PM by case44

For fans of modern country music and those leaning toward a traditional flair, this year's Country Music Hall of Fame class will satisfy enough folks. All have made an imprint on country music that extends past generations.

Here are the names: Jerry Reed. Alan Jackson. Don Schlitz.

Reed was who I've called country music's "wild man", but what people don't realize is that he'd also written songs like "A Thing Called Love", which Johnny Cash made a hit out of, and "Today Is Mine", recorded by Glen Campbell in 1970. You'll never forget his classic hits like "Alabama Wild Man", "Guitar Man", "When You're Hot, You're Hot", "East Bound And Down", and "Lord, Mr Ford". He's also remembered by the industry insiders as a master guitarist, and the genre has had many of those. Even Chet Atkins, Mr Guitar to you and me, said that Jerry was a better fingerstyle guitar picker than he was, and that's saying something.

Jackson was one of the top recording artists of the modern era. He had a traditional style that was neatly used in a time when country music had undergone so much change. Sadly, his style was too late for the Country Gold era (mid-1920s to the mid-1980s), but he had nice remakes of "Who's Cheatin' Who", "Pop A Top", and "Tall, Tall, Trees", originally recorded by Charly McClain, Jim Ed Brown, and George Jones, respectively. And you already know what hits he had with the then-new material mostly written by him. His singles library includes "Here In The Real World", "Gone Country", "Small Town Southern Man", "Chattahoochie", "Chasin' That Neon Rainbow", and countless others. Alan is still a traditionalist at heart when it comes to country music, and he and George Strait proved just that in a duet they did, entitled "Murder On Music Row", a protest song referring to the drastic changes in styles and attitudes of country music in the early 2000s.

Schlitz was a songwriter by trade, but he churned out some gems that a number of artists have done through the years. Basically, Don started his career near the tail end of the Country Gold era and extended it well into the 1990s. Some of his best-known works include "The Gambler", "Forever And Ever, Amen", "When You Say Nothing At All", "Houston Solution", "I Take My Chances", "Strong Enough To Bend", "One Promise Too Late", and many others.

Congratulations, heartily, to these three. The Reed nomination is posthumous, as he passed away in 2009, but the music that all three have put together will live forever. This link below will reveal more for you.
