Red Flags that Indicate an Overactive Neighborhood

Everyone has a comfort zone and/or a preference in terms of how busy he/she wants the neighborhood to be. Moreover, one person's safety boundaries may not be the same for another. One of the things that I eagerly suggest is that home buyers conduct research at least 6+ months prior to purchasing if possible. Above all, NEVER make an impulsive buying decision! Especially since purchasing a home is a most often a 30 year investment. Take your laptop or smart phone with you while searching for a home to conduct research or better yet know which neighborhoods that you want to live in based of research or experience and stay within your desired neighborhoods. Additionally, drive through the neighborhood at different times of day; visit the library, community center and grocery stores; research the PG school ratings & boundaries (www.greatschools.org/
http://gis.pgcps.org/schoolfinder/findschool2.asp); visit the following websites for crime data and/or walkability scores (www.neighborhoodscout.com; www.crimereports.com; and to research registered sex offenders- http://www.dpscs.state.md.us/sorSearch/)
Although EVERY neighborhood has its pros and con, not conducting research can cost you peace of mind.
If you concerned about living in an overly active neighborhood, here are some signs to watch for
1. No grass. In fact, no landscaping at all
2. Many people standing around all day; all night and early in the morning
3. Excessive trash all throughout the community
4. An abundance of traffic
5. Numerous busy liquor stores
6. Heavy presence of police officers
7. LOTS of children and teens outside
8. Several toys/bikes on the lawn
9. Auto window glass fractures on the ground
10. Heavy foot traffic or buses run more frequently
Remember, to each his own in terms of neighborhood safety but if you have concerns about a neighborhood being extremely busy, look for the signs mentioned above so that you can make an informed decision about what is best for you.
