Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I-69 Update: Memphis And Mississippi Bypassed?

Posted 11-02-2016 at 09:29 PM by case44

Money will be hard to come by for some states in trying to get Interstate 69 constructed and completed in their areas. At the federal level, well, forget it. They've been out of green for a long time and won't have any anytime soon. This just leaves things up to individual states.

It's gotten so dire in Tennessee that the unthinkable might be happening: They may not be able to get a stretch of I-69 from Dyersburg to Memphis built. It's also reaching another point: Using I-155 connecting a completed portion of I-69 in Union City over to I-55 in Missouri, and they would be multi-plexed on one highway down to Arkansas and I-40 about ten miles west of Memphis. While this is far from a done deal, it hasn't stopped Arkansas from coming up with a new plan of their own. They may consider a route, possibly along U.S. Highway 79 from I-40 to Pine Bluff, and then possibly going along U.S. 63 to El Dorado, where I-69 was already planned to use on its original routing. Cost-effectiveness was their motivation because it would mean not routing the interstate through the state of Mississippi (where a short stretch of I-69 already exists west of I-55) and shelving a long-awaited bridge project over the Mississippi River. The aftermentioned Pine Bluff connection would require a feasibility study, and that could take a few years, despite construction of I-69 already in progress in Monticello, which would then be out of the way should another plan come to fruition.

Now, let me stress again that these new developments are by no means the final plan, as these states desire to stick with the original plan. If they can't get the funding, then the alternative would be a certainty. That means Missouri could become part of the I-69 network and Mississippi might have to be out...............for now. Needless to say, the feds had better come up with a miracle and pull a rabbit out of a hat. States can only go so far with funding. Projects with a magnitude like this has could take decades rather than years.

So, I suppose, we could hire David Copperfield to magically provide funds for Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas? Maybe I should call him personally.
