"You are just like (insert negative person here)"

One thing as someone who had a crappy home life growing up and an extra crappy father, one thing I hated coming up was being told whenever I did something that my mom didn't agree with she without fail uttered this phrase "you are just like your father!" That stung for reasons I will explain below.
My father was an alcoholic, super lazy, probably cheated on my mother, and gave little care to the fact he had a son. So when she said that phrase, she was saying I was no better than that man. A man who just didn't care about hardly anything except finding a gin bottle.
While that phrase angered me, it pushed me to not end up like him. But I hope parents out there would please refrain from comparing your kids with someone so negative. You will set the water mark low for them if you do that.

I'm so sorry that your mother would say this to you. That would definitely bother me as well.
When you became an adult, did you ever eventually tell her how those words made you feel as a child?Posted 12-11-2016 at 10:41 AM by TruckWife518
