Sweet Bean (2015), Naomi Kawase ★★★★★

Pretty soon now. The scent of the steam has changed.

The scent of the steam?

New #1 for the year (2016 U.S. release date). Stars Kirin Kiki - a veteran of Hirokazu Koreeda's films - most memorable is her performance in Still Walking. This is the first film by Naomi Kawase that I've seen, and I will be seeking out more to see for sure. It's always interesting to see today's younger generation in film, and refreshing that it's not all negative.

American Psycho (2000), Mary Harron ★★★★★

I've got to return some video tapes.

I watched Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe Sunday and thought of American Psycho - that I had not seen it yet. I did not know much about the cast, other than Christian Bale. Did not expect Reese Witherspoon or Chloe Sevigny, or Willem Dafoe.

House of Sand and Fog (2003), Vadim Perelman ★★★★★

So how's the El Rancho.

I'm not there anymore. I'm staying at the Bonnevile now.

I don't know it.

You're looking at it.

You can see Roger Deakins' influence as DOP with every shot.

Vera Drake (2004), Mike Leigh ★★★★★

The Proposition (2005), John Hillcoat ★★★★★

From the director of The Road (2009), Australian director John Hillcoat brings the 1880s outback to life. Written by Nick Cave, who also wrote the music. Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, John Hurt, Emily Watson, and David Gulpilil - who starred in Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout (1971).

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005), Cristi Puiu ★★★★★

Have seen many very good films out of Romania lately - specifically Corneliu Porumboiu (Police, Adjective (2009), 12:08 East of Bucharest (2007)).

Jarhead (2005), Sam Mendes ★★

Young Adult (2011), Jason Reitman ★★★★★

Jason Reitman? Check (Thank You for Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air). Charlize Theron? Check. With the looks she gets throughout you'd think she was a monster.

Killer Joe (2011), William Friedkin ★★★★★

You're probably familiar with the films of William Friedkin; The French Connection in 1971, The Exorcist in 1973, To Live and Die in L.A. 1985, Rules of Engagement 2000, The Hunted 2003.

The Constant Gardener (2005), Fernando Meirelles ★★★★★

Did not know that this is based on a John le Carré novel.

A Hologram for the King (2016), Tom Tykwer ★★★★★

Picture a Tom Hanks movie and a dedicated professional with lofty goals and unuestioned professionalism may come to mind. Every now and then you'll get a flawed individual trying to make his way through life and stay out of his bosses glare and his ex-wife's wrath. Full of interesting characters and casting. Heard of some uproar that they cast a white guy as the taxi driver, who had some of the best lines.

Do you like Chicago?

Not in the winter.

No. The band.

Jia Zhangke, A Guy from Fenyang (2016), Walter Salles ★★★★★

Documentary on one of my favorite directors. If you've never seen a Jia Zhangke movie - start with A Touch of Sin (2013), then Still Life (2006).
