Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.![Stick Out Tongue](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!
Regards,

Why Roy Orbison Should Have Been A Lubbock Music Artist
Posted 09-28-2016 at 09:16 AM by case44
Every once in a while, I take a listen to Texas' legendary Roy Orbison, the guy who had absolutely incredible range in his singing voice. He spent his early years in West Texas with a band called the Wink Westerners, with a nod to the tiny town of Wink, where he spent his teenage years.
Interesting how his family moved to Wink and not, say, Lubbock. I say that because Lubbock, at that particular time (late 1950s to early 1960s) was a strong music town and there were many budding artists that would eventually make the scene in music. You know who they are if you've followed any of this, but I'll just remind you again of a few of them
: Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Delbert McClinton, Mac Davis, and even John Denver. This city was where Roy's family should have moved to, not Wink.
How disappointing that I cannot call him a Lubbock artist. I'm sure he'd done a few gigs in that city, but he actually plied his trade in Odessa before getting his big break. When Roy Orbison was in Denton to go to school, he found out one day that a classmate had just penned a record deal. Perhaps you've heard of him, too. His name was Pat Boone. That, along with watching Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash perform in the Permian Basin, convinced him to be in the music industry. But can you just imagine if Roy had been in Lubbock? Many of that city's artists did some time on local radio stations before getting their big breaks. Imagine if Roy had done that.
Oh, well. We will never really know. He became successful anyway, but he'd have been in greater company if only he'd have spent time in the Hub City.
