Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I Felt The Earth Move --- Literally

Posted 09-03-2016 at 08:33 PM by case44

And all I did was sit at this computer. It was 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, all by my lonesome, and minding my own business when suddenly....

I felt the apartment move from left to right, back and forth, for about a minute or so.

How bizarre was that? What could possibly have been going on for a certain minute on a certain Saturday morning?

Well, I thought nothing of it a few minutes later and went about my routine, posting a few things on City-Data (where it's great to be alive), and then going out for a little breakfast takeout. A few hours later, I looked on the D/FW Scanner website (the thing fire department and police officers transmit information on), and, lo and behold, I found out why things were moving strangely under my feet this morning.

An earthquake had hit a location in northern Oklahoma between Enid and Tulsa, and it registered 5.6 on the Richter scale at its epicenter.

Now, my mother was told about this later and she doesn't believe such an earthquake could be felt way down here in Dallas. I beg to differ. It was felt. It was like the earth moving under my apartment, except that the real happening occurred more than 200 miles away.

This, ladies and gentlemen, was my first experience with an earthquake. A congratulations won't need to be in order. Let's just all hope such doesn't happen closer to home.

Was in Austin at the time (staying with someone who would later provide transportation to Lubbock to see the SFA game, was fun, many thanks to him), drifting in & out of sleep if I recall correctly. I have a poor memory when that happens, but I kind of remember some slight shaking for a while. There's some construction going on in that neighborhood, so I thought that that might have been it. Guess it really was an earthquake. Some news sites said it could be felt in Gilbert, AZ (outside Phoenix), Chicago, Memphis, and Little Rock, AR.
