Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Fighting Off The Annual Cold

Can you say, "Here we go again"? Yes, indeed, I'm back with some Scattershooting for the masses all over America and around the world. There are things going on that you might not hear about any other place..........except right here!

So, let's get our computer campfire cranked up and save that cold water for drinking. You'll need it to wash the marshmallows down.

My only wish is to go through a stretch where, last decade, I actually went three full years without catching a cold. Well, this week, guess what? Your favorite blogger has gotten some cold symptoms, not severe, but enough to cripple my voice. When I developed a scratchy throat last weekend, I had to jump on every preventive measure I could to stave off a potential cold. Thankfully, the conditions I ended up with haven't been as bad as they could have been, but the virus has been with me with a few coughs, a few sneezes, and the small things that suggest that it's a cold.

The last two or three Septembers, I've gotten the dreaded cold for one cause or another. It never fails.

Oh, I've had far worse colds than the one I have, but this morning was enough in the nose to make me call in at work, something I really don't like doing. My nose hasn't really been stopped up until this morning, and it hasn't even been running or sniffling. Ol' Case had to just grab a little allergy medicine and an overdose of vitamins.

You can only guess what my goal will be for 2017, right? I should be much better by the end of the weekend.

Do you like the offbeat or unusual in house designs? Some of them are really picture-worthy. So, how'd you like to experience a house that looks like a shelf from The Container Store? Check this out:

I never understand some people. Why is it that there frequently is some galoot out there who wants to start an account on City-Data and then waste time and energy to make his/her first post a thread starter with spam or utter nonsense for the sake of annoying the reader? Sadly, it is a waste of time for that particular person that you wonder, "Why bother?". Nobody is going to take time to read it anyway. And if there are links to certain sites, who is really going to look at them? I couldn't care less if it's a bitter former poster or just someone out there looking to start things; this crap really needs to stop. And all we can really do is report the post.

I guess some people have too much time on their hands. Way too much.

Just three more work weeks remain before your writer takes off for vacation. Hopefully, the hiring in Brokerage can hold off until I finish my trip. Face it, sports fans, I need as much therapy as possible as the dispatch job keeps getting more stressful and tiresome.

Still remember Paul Harvey? I do, and every now and then, I go on YouTube just to listen to some excerpts from his old radio broadcasts. They've even got a few television appearances from him, too. America's most respected news broadcaster is still missed to this day. The Tulsa boy-turned-Chicagoan used to captivate audiences six days a week with the news with his own touch of commentary. At least, he was honest.

How unbelievable that, today, the state of journalism is mostly dead now. Paul Harvey has got to be rolling over in his grave. I could only imagine his commentary on the events of today....

"Paul Harvey. ------- Good day!"

The Houston Astros can't seem to decide whether to be hot or cold. Right now, they're hot. But this weekend and early next week, they're in for two big challenges. One is the Chicago Flubs --- er, Cubs. That series will be followed by another against my hometown Texas Rangers, a once-floundering franchise but now one that is doing very well right now.

Stay tuned to see if these Astros have what it takes to win at least four of the six games in that series. The way I see it, every game the Astros play is a must-win. All of them. It would be nice if the Astros can catch the Rangers and challenge for the division title. The more likely scenario would be Houston playing for a Wild Card spot since the Astros are not at a point where they can be counted on to consistently get the big victory when it's needed.

If you're an Astros fan, hopefully we'll get a pleasant surprise.

I mentioned time-wasting earlier. Guess that also applies to the group called Black Lives Matter. Perhaps those people think that that camp is more important than everybody else. Truth is, in their eyes, nobody else's life matters. They just want to cause trouble for as many folks as possible.

All the more reason for sane thinkers to vote Republican in the November elections. America is such a mess right now. And everybody's lives matter.

Recent brewings in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Pacific are big reminders that it's still hurricane season. Residents in Florida and Hawaii are bracing for tropical storms to hit their areas this Labor Day weekend. And Hawaii will have a double-whammy as they will experience not one, but two storms to skirt either side of the island in the next five to seven days. Yikes!

As a country music lover (well, classic country, anyway), I appreciate radio stations such as WSM-AM (650) in Nashville. They just have a purity and a purist way of presenting the music and they've got just the right songs, not just from yesteryear, but the modern day, too. The streamline from them is on my computer as I type up this Scattershooting just for you.

Press on, WSM! Keep it country, and don't ever change.

Hard to believe it's been seven years since Paul Harvey's passing. I used to listen to him frequently in my younger years. A very wise man.
