Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Two Interstate Corridors Sorely Needed In Texas

Posted 06-25-2016 at 09:20 AM by case44

For a while, you've read my harpings on the latest interstate projects going on in my home state of Texas. I've given you updates on I-69, and in the future, I'm planning to get you some word on the new I-14 corridor, currently just in Central Texas, but will eventually be stretching from West Texas to East Texas.

Despite the money woes of our precious Texas Department of Transportation, the state is still in need for improved mobility in some key locations. I keep thinking about having a road connecting Wichita Falls with Lubbock, giving travelers a faster connection to the South Plains from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. U.S. Highway 82 is good for local commuters and ranchers, but it's not good enough for efficient movement of heavier goods. An interstate corridor would bring even greater opportunities, not only to an ever-improving Lubbock, but also to the small towns along that route. The other road needs to be a connection from Amarillo to Fort Worth, and that one, I believe, is long overdue. A lot of truck traffic uses U.S. 287 between those places, not to mention Wichita Falls being an important stop along the way. Also, there are a lot of spots along the route that have stretches of empty space intended specifically for a freeway of this caliber, and it's especially evident between Sunset and Alvord, Texas. Why not?

Just thoughts right now. The existing Interstate 44 is ripe for an extension (Kell Freeway connecting with Marsha Sharp would be perfect!), and the numbers 32 and 34 have been tossed around by different sources as a possibility for the Cowtown-Amarillo trail. This comes with the realization that getting funds for all this will be slow to come, and the roads, if they get built, may not happen in my lifetime. In a state where there are already more interstate miles than any other in this great union of ours, it wouldn't hurt to put in a few more.
