The Lobster (2015), Yorgos Lanthimos ★★★★★

The Lobster is in keeping with two other Yorgos Lanthimos films that I've seen - Dogtooth (2009), and Alps (2011). If there's such a thing as mainstream movies, his aren't. This was his first with a big name cast - Rachel Weisz, Colin Farrell, and Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Color, The Grand Budapest Hotel). Great performance by Ariane Labed, who plays the maid, and had the starring role in Alps. The heartless woman is played by Angeliki Papoulia - who plays the oldest daughter in Dogtooth. I think this may be one of the roles made for John C. Reilly.

When I heard of this coming out, and sneaking a peak at a few seconds of the trailer, so as to not spoil the whole movie, I was more than eager to see this. With the track record of this town for limited releases, which I thought this would be, I went with a PAL Amazon UK dvd for 13 usd shipped. Now it's playing at a couple theaters. Go figure.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not a blockbuster. Not the kind of comedy most people are used to - but I lol several times. A dystopian city where people go along and serve out their roles, which ever path is chosen. His films remind me of Roy Andersson's work (Songs from the Second Floor (2000), You, the Living (2007), A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014)), which also defy categorization and if you like any of them, you'll want to see them all.

One thing I'll say about one of the driving points in the film is love. Not the kind of love that comes to mind to the people watching this. But something that needs to be proved - for reasons that become apparent. A third person looking on has to be thoroughly and positively convinced. There can be no doubt.

[spoiler] A dead dog, self mutilation. [spoiler] < hightlight to read

Currently ranked #2 for 2016.
