The Oceanside Pier

I wanted to talk about some of the things I love about Oceanside. One of the things that makes Oceanside unique is our pier.

There are currently only 4 communities in San Diego county with a pier. The pier that you see today in Oceanside has been built and rebuilt many times over the years due to storm damage. The original Oceanside pier was built in 1888 near what is now called Wisconsin Street. It was destroyed in a storm a couple of years later in 1890. The wooden pilings from that original pier can still be seen at low tide in that area. The next pier was built in 1894 where the current pier stands today, near Pier View Way. This pier too would succumb to storms as would three more after that. The pier that stands today is the 6th pier and was built in 1987 at a cost of 5 million dollars. This pier, at 1954 feet in length is currently the longestwooden pier on the west coast.

When I have friends or family in town visiting, a favorite pastime ofours is to go down to the pier just to walk around. Withour wonderful San Diego weather, it’s as good an excuse as any to get outside own at the beach.

Besides the ocean breezes and beautiful sunsets, the Oceanside pier is a good place to people-watch or spot local wildlife, especially the friendly pelicans and other birds that are always hanging out on the pier. You might even be lucky enough to see some whales or dolphins in the water, in addition to the many surfers out riding the waves.

At the end of the pier sits Ruby’s,a 50s style diner and about half way down the pier is a bait and tackle shop and restrooms. At any time of the day or night you will see groups of people and families fishing off the side of the pier. It’s free to fish and it’s fun to see whatpeople are hauling in for the day.

Below the pier is a pavilion with food and drinks for sale. There are also bikes for rent if you’d like to like to cruise the boardwalk along the beach. Just south of
the pier is an amphitheater that was built in 1919 and can seat about 2000 people. It’s currently used for
graduations, rallies, concerts, etc. In 2012 it was renamed the Junior Seau Pier Ampitheater in honor of the local football hero who was raised in Oceanside and who did so much for the community.

So there you have it! If you’re ever in Oceanside, come on down to the pier and have a look around. It’s a great way to spend a lazy afternoon! And if you’re in the market for real estate in or around the Oceanside area, please give me a call!

Next time I hit San Diego, I'll go check that out. I've got a couple of cousins there and have been meaning to go there.
