In most of America I believe most couples can live just fine on $10 an hour

My husband nets just under $40,000. We live in a rural community, are renters, and have two kids.

It's not easy. Luckily, I just got a part time job that allows me to set my own hours. That is adding about $8,000 a year to our total, so now it feels comfortable. But we had a unfortunate situation come up, and we really struggled financially. We're just now getting it under control. And we don't pay for our cell phones or have cable. We drive older, used cars, and eat a lot of beans and rice.

We definitely don't smoke, do drugs, or have tattoos.

And while figuring finances with kids, you have to figure in costs of sports and activities. Hint: it's a lot.

Also, Washington state doesn't have income tax.
