Refugees are welcome in Canada

Posted 01-11-2016 at 11:56 AM by DavidRaonic

In the past few months, we have seen a groundswell of concern and support from people all over the country who want to do something to help the plight of the four million Syrians who are refugees.

Men, women and children have fled their homes because of the extremely violent conflict that has killed so many of their fellow Syrians, and made their cities uninhabitable. There are eight million Syrians displaced within their own country, in addition to the four million who have fled to other countries. With half the country's people displaced, it is the worst crisis of this kind since World War II.

Canadians of all ages and walks of life are teaming up with others to raise funds, privately sponsor a refugee family or volunteer for organizations that help refugees.

The Canadian Council for Refugees, an umbrella group of organizations that work with refugees across the country, and human rights organization Amnesty International have launched a joint campaign to help Canadian communities welcome more refugees from Syria, and other countries around the world.
