Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Another New Texas Interstate? Yep - It's Coming

You knew it was going to happen. You just didn't know when it was going to happen. Like it or not, it's a big deal to many folks in Central Texas, and a new interstate will eventually make its way into our everyday lives, not to mention Rand McNally, Google, MapQuest, and any other source you can think of.

Interstate 14, ladies and gentlemen, is coming to Texas. Pretty soon, after the FHWA and AASHTO each do their thing, the Texas Transportation Commission will do theirs. You'll begin to see I-14 shields along U.S. Highway 190 from Belton to Copperas Cove, serving the Killeen-Fort Hood area. Basically, the purpose of this new east-west corridor is for military base travel, moving goods to and from seven different bases along the route (Fort Bliss via I-10, Fort Hood, Fort Polk, Camp Beauregard, Robins Air Force Base, Fort Benning, and Fort Gordon). So, it's El Paso all the way through Killeen and Bryan-College Station, Texas, followed by Alexandria, Louisiana, then to Natchez, Mississippi, and then Montgomery, Alabama, followed then by Macon and Augusta, Georgia. Montgomery would be the only real major city along I-14's actual route since it really won't go through El Paso. Ironically, the proposed new interstate had only been an idea originally just for the areas between Natchez and Augusta. Who would have thought that Texas would have the first stretch of Interstate 14?

The new I-14 will now join I-69 (which I discuss frequently here on Case's Column), I-2, I-10, I-20, I-27, I-30, I-35, I-40, I-44, I-45, I-49, I-169, I-369, I-410, I-610, I-635, and I-820 as part of the Texas interstate network. Can you say, "Whew!!" ??

While it won't tie any big cities together, it will provide an alternative to Interstate 10 in case any hurricanes or like storms happen to get in the way. For the casual traveler, if nothing else, it will at least get you to some important regional spots, but that's about it. More to come on this at a later time, but be ready for the new signs.

By the way, several years ago, I had an idea for a Lubbock-to-Houston corridor which I had originally called I-14, later changed to I-18 when the aforementioned Mississippi-to-Georgia idea came up.

See what happens when I don't take time to write to some congressmen??

Oh, well. Central Texas, here it comes. Get your kicks when you can on the new Interstate 14, coming to that completed, interstate-standard road near you sometime in 2016.
