Tips to get you through the holiday season on a budget

Posted 12-07-2015 at 06:38 AM by DavidRaonic

Have you started to feel like the Grinch when the holidays roll around? With guests to feed, presents to buy and homes to prepare, this time of year can be tough on the wallet. Don't let the pressure get to you - follow these tips to sail through the season without breaking the bank.

1. Host a potluck holiday dinner. Encourage your guests to bring a dish to your holiday feast, helping to reduce your grocery bill. Sharing the responsibility of preparing potluck dishes will help take the pressure off and adds to the fun.

2. Get inventive with your gift wrapping. Save a few bucks and help decrease waste by recycling various items around the house. For wrapping paper try newspaper, paper grocery bags or comic books. Head outside and grab some acorns to use as bows and leaves to use for nametags. Your family will be so impressed with your creativity and personal touches.

3. Find easy gifts that everyone wants.

It's really the thought that counts, not the amount you spend. And no one ever refused a new pair of pyjamas, a fresh pair of socks or slippers to keep them cozy during the winter. To make it easy on yourself grab a flannel sleepwear set or a couple pairs of T-Max socks for your family from your local Mark's store.

4. Cut down your own tree.Rather than spending money on a pre-cut Christmas tree, retreat back to the rustic ways of your ancestors and cut down your own. While pricing varies in each province, it's a fraction of the cost of a precut tree. Heading out on a tree cutting adventure can be an entertaining activity for the whole family.

5. Budget, budget, budget.Draft a budget that outlines what you can afford to spend. Include specific details such as gift ideas for each person so that when you head to the mall, you know exactly what you are looking for.
