Simulated 2015 CFB Season (alternate universe)

Posted 12-02-2015 at 11:51 AM by chadgates

Thought this would be fun, at least to me. Maybe others will also enjoy it.

What I've done is created an alternate universe where there are 8 super conferences aligned regionally. There will be an 11 game regular season, where each team will play the 7 teams in their division and then half of the teams in the opposite division. Then a conference championship week, and finally an eight team playoff consisting of those 8 conference winners.

The brackets will be similar to the NFL, in that every round is a "regional game" rather than a seeded tourney-style format. So, like in the NFL, where the NFC never plays the AFC until the Superbowl, likewise in this format regions 1-4 (The West) will play each other and regions 5-8 (The East) will play each other and the championship will always feature an East representative vs a West representative. This allows for home games during each round.

In this alternate universe, there are still "bowl games", but they begin after the first round is over and the bowl committees may only select from teams which have been eliminated from the playoffs. This will allow one final game for each losing team, and still create some pretty great bowl games which will always feature an East/West matchup.

First let's take a look at the new CFB conference alignments, which should be fun all on its own:

Alright so there you have it. Beginning sometime soon I will begin simulating matchups from the 2014 season using a pretty neat site I found called "Whatifsports".
They have the 2014 teams but won't have the 2015 teams until after the New Year I am guessing...

Ohio St. is in a very weak division and probably wins it every season for the foreseeable future. LSU probably also.

I like the NE conference with West Virginia and Pitt playing every season again, but that North division is very very weak.

The Smokey Mountain conference is pretty neat. If I'm not mistaken 7 different current conferences are represented. That North division is interesting as every one of them, with the exception of Kentucky and Illinois have had some degree of success in the conferences they are really in.

The way you have the schedule set up, would make judging teams tough, since each conference is essentially in a vacuum. IDK if I like that, but it is intriguing.

I don't understand the bowl thing. If they don't start until after the first round, and they can only choose teams that have been eliminated, then you only have like 2 bowls one week and then 1 the following week. How does that work?

Yeah, I mis-typed the Bowl thing. What I meant was that the Big Bowls would choose from the losers. The main thing is that every bowl will feature an East vs West match-up.
