Things I wish I knew at 17

There are so many things I wish someone had told me when I was younger, but then again, I probably would not have listened!
Never be less than you are for anyone! People change certain things for those they love, and that is normal and healthy. It is NOT healthy to deny WHO you are for another person. Either they want who and what you are, or they don't. Life is too short to waste time trying to be who and what you are not.
Never be ashamed of who and what you are. You have been given a unique set of gifts, use them and be proud of them.
Never give yourself up for anyone. Sometimes people tend to give over their whole personality, and their brains for another person. Remember that you, and the possibilities that lie before you in life are infinitely more important than anything a possible love interest can offer you at this stage in your life. When you feel ready, date, learn what you want and don't want in a partner, then, REMEMBER those things. It is too easy to loose yourself for a long time, and it is too hard to get things back on the right track once you find yourself again.
The person you are supposed to end up with will love, respect and accept you. You will not need to change your core being for them, they will already love who you are.
Don’t be afraid of trying new things, you never know what you are going to like……….but,use common sense and don’t get involved in things you are too smart to get involved in! It is normal and completely natural at when you are young and beyond even, to be finding yourself, just don’t find yourself with the wrong crowd. The decisions you make, and actions you take now will effect your future in ways you can’t comprehend at this time.
Remember, every day when you wake up YOU have the power to make it a good day, or a bad day by your attitude. What you put out there is what will come back around to you. Don’t let other’s bad moods dictate your life. Have the kind of day YOU want to have every day.
Laugh robustly and often. Laugh at yourself. Accept yourself and others. Smile, people will always be more receptive to you when you do. Life isn’t always easy or positive, but it never hurts to search out the good in every situation. Love is the answer to almost anything. Work hard, you will never regret it, but also learn how to relax every once in a while!
Parents and kids just butt heads, it has always been like that and always will be. Don't judge your parents too harshly. One day you will look back through the lens of maturity and the space of many years and realize that they were just human after all.
Use your brains, education is the key that will help you open any door you want to. Don't depend on someone else to support you, because sometimes they won't come through.
No one told me these things. Some of them I learned through experience. Some of them thorough bad experiences. It took such a long time to know who and what I am, and longer yet to accept that person. It took a long time to know unconditional love from another person. Life is always in a state of flux, but I can finally say at 41 years of age that I know who I am, that I love another person with all that I am, that I have been the best parent that I could be, mistakes and all, and that the next chapter in life is just around the corner.
