Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Something To Chew On? Dealing With A Closed Dentist's Office

Not only am I writing to you right now, I am also writhing. That's because I've had a nagging pain below the lower bridge in my mouth since the weekend. It also happens to be in a spot where I had gotten a root canal some two or three years ago (and was actually written about here). Let's just hope that I don't have to miss any work if worse came to worse.

This writer has done it all. I've done the saltwater rinse. I've done the Anbesol. I've eaten aspirin as if it were candy. I've done antiseptic. I've even rubbed an ice cube on my chin right above the pain spot.

Rather than trying to live with the pain and a steady diet of Advil every four hours, I took it upon myself to visit my dentist's office to take care of the problem as a walk-in once I'd gotten off of work. Well, when I got there, there were no cars in the lot, so I thought, "Hey, no waiting!" By the time I'd gotten to the door, I discovered that it was locked. Locked. How can that be? Their lunch is usually between 1 and 2 p.m., but it was 2:45 when I got there, so you'd think there'd be activity inside. There wasn't. All the trappings of a dentist office were still in place, but some of the lights were off. And there was no sign on the door stating why they were closed that day.

There I was, toothache and all, wondering why a dentist office would be closed on a Monday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. How can that be? Maybe I'll learn the tooth --- er, truth --- soon enough. Their website is still up, so they can't be permanently closed. So, Casester had to reshuffle his errand plans and got tomorrow's stuff done today. What will I do tomorrow? Probably call them before making another attempt at going over there. In the meantime, supper's already out of the way, but it hurts like heck to chew. I'd have to settle for soft foods and yogurt and mashed potatoes for now until I get my fanny fixed into a dentist's chair.

Sometimes, I guess I just have to live with a little pain now and then.

Oh, and do you want some irony? Do you know what song was playing on my radio just before I arrived at the dentist? None other than "Where Were You When I Needed You", by the Grass Roots. It just befit the ensuing scene at hand.

Found out why the dentist's office was closed. They had a small carnival in the parking lot, so the office closed early.

    Update****

Lower bridge is doing much better. The gum isn't hurting. Had a brief swelling there yesterday, but a simple massaging of the gum repeatedly with an electric toothbrush did the trick.

I already have an appointment with my hygienist next month, so there's no need for me to take any drastic action now. I'll probably talk to her about this situation, as bizarre and weird as it was.

I had a tooth cracked for eating a pork chop one night and was pretty painful and uncomfortable. It was like after 10pm, I knew most dentist offices are closed but did a search anyway and found a true 24 hour dentist.
