Time to ramp up

Posted 10-26-2015 at 08:33 AM by reds37win

Time to try this again...

My wife and I have been married for 15 years and we are pretty happy with just about every aspect of our life...except maybe our health.

We both struggle with our weight. I'm about 5'8" and am about 10-15 pounds overweight. I'm fighting diabetes, high blood pressure and have had on and off issues with cholesterol.

My wife is more than 30 pounds overweight, but has no real health issues, other than her knee gives her problems from time-to-time.

How did we get here?

We both worked IT jobs for the last 16 years, in Virginia, at the same location. I would drive the hour it took to get to work and she would drive the hour home. When you spend two hours, or more, each day on the road, it becomes a difficult proposition to motivate yourself to do more.

Five or six years ago, I began training for a bike tour across North Carolina to accompany my dad who threatened to go at it alone. My sisters and mother recruited me, so I had little choice. Within five months, I was riding close to fifty miles per weekend and had finished off a couple fifty mile rides. In addition, we were stopping off at the gym on the way home three and four nights per week. We were in the best shape of our lives.

But, like anything else, if you don't keep it up...

Again, trying to work and commute as we did just didn't work well for us. That all changed a few months ago as we moved from VA to NC (Raleigh) and now live in a great neighborhood that is conducive to bike riding and walking.

The problem is, our motivation. We are so used to coming home and collapsing. Now we just need to get moving.

My wife is not working, so she has time to walk. As a result, she is walking around the neighborhood, which is quite hilly, to the tune of 2.6 miles per walk. However, I cannot walk when she does, so it would have to be when I get home around 6.

So, this blog post is more motivation for me. I have to get out more and walk. My longer-term goal is to get back into the gym and get in good shape again. I'll try to post every other week or so to track progress. I'll include some dietary changes (we are currently gluten free) and see where that gets us, as well.
