hunterseat df: Hunter Seat Equitation is a division that is judged on the ability and the style of the rider. The riders can be judged both over fences and on the flat.

Although true, hunters DO eat, at least the skilled ones do, my name derives from the world of horses.

And because the word hunter is in my name, people automatically think I'm a guy. Not even close.

Whenever I meet someone named Hunter I have to bite my tongue to keep from saying "That's my name, too!"

Seagull(s)

Posted 10-09-2015 at 08:57 PM by hunterseat

During the year I spent in paradise, aka Hawaii, I really loved the beach but I really missed seagulls. Having grown up in the Tidewater area of Virginia, a beach without seagulls is like a day without sunshine. (best I could do)

Now I'm in New England and there are plenty! Thank goodness I'm near water. And trees. And the good gulls of the air.

Today I was walking out in the beautiful sunshine and there must have been 50 seagulls swooping and swirling overhead. I stopped, looked up and did a 360, marveling at the graceful dance in the air. Immediately I thought of the Bad Company song that I used to sing at the top of my lungs, driving my 64 Chevy Impala, 8-track player blaring. (Hey, it was a Pioneer!)

If you're not familiar with the song it's a classic.

Watching the video isn't really necessary. I can sing it for you! Like I sang it for the seagulls today. I'll just add comments in parenthesis.

So it goes: Seagull you fly (and man can they ever!) across the horizon. Into the misty morning sunnnn..... Nobody asks you where you are going, Nobody knows where you're from. (How profound. If you asked would they hear you?) And you fly (yep) through the sky (duh) never asking why. (Why would they?) And you fly all around (that's what they were doing and when I sang that my heart was soaring right there with them) ...till somebody-ee shoots you down...(WHA??? Who shoots seagulls? People don't eat them, do they? Is that something I missed during my long-ago caterwauling? I'm pretty sure I was at the age - and state of mind that I totally empathized with the seagull and was totally mad at "the man" for the injustice. Hold on, I'm stuck in a parenthesis.) Whew, that's better.

It's funny how the songs you grew up with sound so different now. I was in the car with my kids when they were around the elementary school age. I was flipping through the car radio channels and found a CSNY song. "Hey kids! This is a great song!! If you can't be...with the one you love...love the one you're with..." They looked at each other and I quickly changed the channel. Not exactly teaching your children well...

So I realized it was just a great musical number probably written, if not performed under the influence of some mind altering substance, being the 70's and all. And I do love seagulls. They looked so beautiful overhead today as I enjoyed the warm fall day. They began circling farther away, towards the waterfront. I continued walking and was smiling as I noticed one lone seagull crossing directly overhead. You try not to think about it when so many birds are overhead but so far so.... HEY!!! The lone bird seemed to be targeting me and dropped a big wet one that I actually dodged as it fell. SPLAT. Huh. Rethinking the whole "shoot you down" line of the song. I also thought about the time I picked through seagull bones on the target end of a sniper range but that's another story.

I continued on my walk, stopped by to check on a friend, told her about the seagulls and you know what she says? "Did you shoot it down?" She doesn't even know the song.

True story. Happened today. Life is strange.
