Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's Vacation Journal: A Tale Of Two Hotels

Posted 10-05-2015 at 07:19 AM by case44

Oh, yes, I am on vacation once again. I thought I'd get my butt down to South Texas for some R&R. So far, it's been interesting these first few days on the road.

As I'm writing this, I'll be moving to my third location after I leave here in just a few minutes. I've spent three days in two places: Corpus Christi and Pharr (near McAllen). That means I've been spending time in two hotels. The study in contrasts of where I have stayed is amazing. You could say, "Case, you should write a book about this...." Well, this blog is close enough.

Where I stayed in Corpus was the Comfort Inn & Suites at South Padre Island Drive near Old Brownsville Road, and the room they gave me was really cramped. Walking space was really narrow, but at least, I had a good night's sleep in this brief stopover on the way to the Rio Grande Valley. One plus is that it did have a walk-in shower, which is way better than a tub. Oh, and it was also a handicapped room. Oh, well. My visit to that city has convinced me that I haven't been there enough, so I'm thinking about staying there for a week next year sometime. Corpus is an exciting city with much to offer, and it's got the best drive of any Texas city along Shoreline Boulevard/Ocean Drive. But that room at the Comfort was too cramped.

Now, I'm in Pharr and wrapping up two nights at the LaQuinta Inn & Suites at Interstate 69C and Nolana Loop. This is a bizarre collection of buildings, as LaQuinta actually has two hotels right next to one another, and one of them has two buildings. That's right, they have three buildings in the same parking lot. I happen to be in the extension building right next to their main building at their south hotel (the other is just north of it). The room they gave me was in stark contrast to what I had in Corpus Christi. This room was a genuine suite! It had a bedroom and a living room and a spacious bathroom space and two windows. Wow! Lots of space. I use a dolly to help load and unload my baggage and all the other "stuff", and it's a whale of a lot easier here than it was in Corpus.

Talk about the Three Bears; remember that story? "My bed was too big, and this bed was too small...." The same could be applied to my hotel rooms.

On to South Padre Island for four nights, and then San Antonio for one more. Wonder if my South Padre room will be "just right"? I reserved a room with an ocean view. But then, this writer isn't complaining, as this trip, so far, has been great.

This definitely was not uneventful. Guess what I saw at my hotel at South Padre? One very small live crab. You can't make this stuff up. First time I've seen one up close.

Spotted him between the back door and the pool area.

By the time, Red Tide warnings have been in effect all week at Padre. Must be the washed-up fishies ashore.

LOL. Amazing what you can discover when you plan for different locations. You'll need to go back to that Pharr hotel again. That's something.
