Voice of the Health Sector

Some red flags have been going up about Canada's national health-care system lately. The demand for health services is high, especially as the population ages, infrastructure is getting old, there are shortages of some health professionals, drugs are expensive, and there is a need for more accessible community-based services.
Most Canadians assume that their publicly funded national health-care system will always be there for them when they need it. But, the federal government has stepped back from its leadership role, and there is much less collaboration with other levels of government.
The people who deliver health services across Canada – physicians, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, psychologists, social workers and the like – have made recommendations about how to fix the system and plan for the future. The Health Action Lobby (HEAL) is the voice of the health-care sector and represents approximately 650,000 health-care providers and Canada's top health organizations. That collective voice is calling for key changes and investments that will help secure the future of the health system.
With a federal election on the horizon, these professionals have issued a Consensus Statement called The Canadian Way that shares their views about the big issues politicians need to be focused on – our aging population, chronic disease management, the potential for innovation, system performance and the high cost of pharmaceuticals. Their message is that Canadians are looking to governments, especially the federal government, to step up and work together in the Canadian Way, an approach based on consensus, collaboration and compassion that everybody can get behind.
In advance of the federal election, those whose life work is the health of Canadians are asking party leaders to articulate their vision for the future of health care in Canada.
