Family time redefined

Here is some good news for parents everywhere: Family time doesn't need to be elaborate to have a lasting impact on the growth and development of children. According to experts, building the bond between young kids and their parents is as simple as spending time together connecting through play.
“Positive, supportive relationships are very important during the early years of life,” says Deborah Weber, Ph.D., senior manager of child research at Fisher-Price. “They are essential for cognitive development and healthy emotional growth and social attachment.”
Dr. Weber shares the following family bonding ideas for today's busy parents:
1. Make everyday activities fun. Involve the family in typical, must-do tasks, like grocery shopping or chores – and turn them into games. For example, have laundry sorting races with the kids, let them inform what goes on the grocery list, or have them set up the sprinkler the next time you need to water the lawn.
2. Pick toys that you love too. Like children, adults are more likely to play with what they enjoy, so pick out toys you find fun as a parent. Explore games or toys that share what you love, a special hobby or talent, with your child.
3. Head to the restaurant. Eating in restaurants doesn't have to be daunting. Pick a kid-friendly spot and use this time to connect during a busy workweek. Bring colouring books and crayons, quiet games, or even a deck of cards so the family can interact while waiting for the food to arrive. And the best part? No dishes.
“The benefits of family time last a lifetime,” says Dr. Weber. “Introducing play into your day is a great way to connect and grow with your child.”
