Child Care?

Posted 08-06-2015 at 04:35 PM by anneliesewright

I used to work for The Community School of the Park Cities. Most of the teachers were very good, but three of them were mean to the babies & toddlers everyday. These three teachers were on their best behavior when parents or Childcare Licensing came to visit, but this is what I witnessed behind closed doors. (I deleted their names, but please note, the babies & toddlers are still under the care of these women.)

A teacher in infant room made the babies stay in their cribs for several hours, yelled at them for wanting to get up, yelled at them for crying, grabbed them aggressively, shoved food in their mouths aggressively, leaned all her weight against their little bodies when she washed their faces in the sink (which can injure their organs) and lifted them by one arm (which can dislocate their shoulder). Her frustration & impatience caused very negative energy around the babies.

Another teacher in a different infant room continuously swaddled a baby whose head was flat, and put him on his back, causing his head to flatten even worse. (Swaddling in daycare is against the law.) She spent a great deal of time texting & talking on her cell phone. The school’s website says the teachers hold the babies, but I heard her tell them repeatedly, “Ain't nobody gonna hold you.” It also appeared that she would rather make them sleep than anything else.

A teacher in the toddler room is very impatient & rough with them. She reprimands them instead of using redirection & squeezes their shoulders when they don’t obey. When I read her profile on the website, it describes qualifications that are more suitable for teaching older children, yet she’s been placed with toddlers. It's evidently not a right fit for her, or them.

I explained these things to the director, but she didn't like what I had to say. She transferred me to a different room & cut my hours in half. When I asked her what she was going to do about the incidents, she said her lawyer told her not to talk to me about it, so I reported the incidents to Childcare Licensing. They visited the school three times, because, even after I called them the first & second time, one of the infant teachers continued her same bad behavior. Ultimately, Licensing told me there was nothing else they could do because I had not taken any pictures or videos & they needed "proof" of the incidents. There are no video cameras in the school, so I asked the director to install some, but she said no.
Childcare Licensing also said that I just need to wait until another teacher makes a report, but assistant teachers are afraid to tell on lead teachers. I've waited several months for someone else to have the courage to speak up, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm not willing to wait any longer.

Something must be done to stop the abuse & bring awareness to the parents. I haven't been able to sleep at night knowing how badly the babies & toddlers are being treated & that the school is being run by a director who doesn't care.
