What's Important?

Jonah 2:8 (NIV) - "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs. After reading this I thought what's the big deal? I mean it was written thousands of years ago. I don't cling to idols, and I don't know anyone who does. But then it occurred to me that we may not have statues of idols, but an idol can be anything that we consider more important than God. They could be our jobs, bank accounts, our possessions, or most anything we put before him. While everything we have are blessings from God, we all need to be careful that we don't put any of them first. During Biblical times idols of all kinds were a common sight. During his work in the country of Greece the Apostle Paul found many of them (Acts 17:16 - While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols."). In his word God tells us that idols are nothing and that he is the only God that exists (1 Corinthians 8:4 - So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.”) Even after the Lord delivered the Jewish people out of slavery in Egypt, they began to forget what God had done for them and they began worshiping idols. Later in their travels the Jewish people were told by God to destroy the idols of foreigners they encountered, and to be careful that they were not influenced by them (Deuteronomy 7:25 - The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord your God). If the Bible tells us that an idol (or anything we regard as an idol) is worthless, why would we cling to them when we could have the real thing in Jesus Christ? He alone paid for our sins so that one day we can live in the heavenly kingdom, not some worthless idol that can't do anything for us. What About Jesus?
