What's Google up to in Alabama?

Posted 06-25-2015 at 02:22 PM by Fortoggie

Today Google announced that it would build a new $ 600 million search center in little Stevenson, Al. While it may seem strange to comment here on a church page it does have a comparison role. Sometimes we must turn our mind around corners to get a different view. Just think that google is only about 20 years old and is one of the richest companies in the world. Think that the Cog is 131 years old and it's investment in Alabama may well be less than $ 600 million. [This is no way trying to diminish the church but just trying to get a handle on scale ] over long years I have found that people do not think the same way about church as they do any other department in their lives. I have been in Stevenson and it definitely can be rated as a redneck community. Now there will be a major power-shift to high tech and a higher standard of living. In years pass I have been in many rural Cog's and for the most part they have encouraged the redneck lifestyle. Why am I using the Cog as the model church? The Cog has about one million members here in the states and and is getting itself pretty well wired for the internet [ the UMC and the SBC is to big and spread out to follow.] Also it appears that about 1/3 of the Cog leadership is trying to find a new way forward with a new identity, about 1/3 want to return to a yesteryear and the other 1/3 are not aware of what's going on. That pretty much sums up many institutions. So far I have not noticed that google has been accused of being the mark of the beast nor does it have an evil image but rather an information gathering and distribution image. In a real way that is what the church has been up to all these years [ gathering and disseminating information ] So from time to time I would like to bring up this new google facility and make some comparisons with the Cog, letting the Cog represent the larger church and see if I can get you to put your thinking hat on and help me ponder the future.
