Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Did A Superintendent Just Cave To A Board Member?

Well, look what the cat dragged in? Another round of Scattershooting right here in the magical world of City-Data, where it's great to be alive. Lots of things going on in your world and in mine, so let's pass the marshmallows as we gather again around the computer campfire, but please, nobody sing "Kumbaya", okay?

For many years, Frisco, Texas, has had a great school district. It still does. It's always had good leadership and a great school board who always actively tries to make the best decisions possible for the staff and students in said district. They hold prayers before every board meeting (Well, hey, we're in the South; that's just what we do). It's a school board that can do no wrong.

Well, now, the squeaky clean image is not any stranger to controversy (Anyone remember the Lebanon Trail High naming faux pas from last fall?), but in the following instance, it's one that is really starting to hit home............and throw egg yolk all over a few faces. Superintendent Jeremy Lyon had arrived in Frisco a few short years ago amid much fanfare in filling the shoes vacated by Rick Reedy. So far, he had done very well. But now, it looks like he's being set up here. You see, a school board member, who has a child in band at Frisco High School, did not like the results of a recent audition and the placement in a particular band which followed. The kid, obviously, was upset about it, too. Principal Sylvia Palacios stood by the band director who made the decision. Well, the decision did not please the parent, a school board member. So, that school board member wrote to Dr Lyon and asked him to take action against the principal. The decision that followed? Ms Palacios was reassigned to the Student Opportunity Center.

Whatever you may believe of the things that have been written in the past week will be left up to you. The students, nonetheless, sided with the principal, risking an unexcused absence by marching to the administration building in support of Ms Palacios despite Dr Lyon's presence at the students' home campus. Did the superintendent cave to the demands of one single school board member? While you're thinking about that, sure, the superintendent has to make the personnel decisions, but was he pressured? My guess is he was, but we won't know for certain over time. Sometimes the hardest decisions to make are the ones like this one where you just can't get rid of the principal from the district altogether.

As for that board member, as messy as this episode has gotten, that person should resign from the board. Life is not going to be fair and not everything is going to go the way you want it to be. It's a lesson that kids and adults both need to understand. Teachers and staffers have to do their jobs. Let them.

We just had National Donut Day today. No, I didn't go to any donut places like I did last year, but hopefully, you did! I'd have gotten a few glazed donuts, since they are my favorite. Last year, I remember writing about it and it was a day to rejoice. I need to put this on my calendar for next year....

I learned something new on Phlash Phelps' show on '60s on 6. He has a thing for geography, and he had a caller tell him about a town called Engagement, Ohio. We learned that it's located between Marion and Dayton, Ohio.

You have to think hard about this one.

By the way, what a great channel Sirius XM Channel 6 is, playing the great tunes from the 1960s, including the big hits as well as the obscure. Phlash Phelps always has a wonderful program, along with the collections and the knowledge of Pat St John, the venerable Cousin Brucie (He turns 80 this year!), and a guy who I call Mister Segue, Dave Hoeffel. They're all great to listen to each day and are great radio company.

The Internal Revenue Service has been involved in more scandals these last few years than I can shake a stick at. And the latest investigation suggests that these guys now just want to be mean. Oh, and I have not received my money back from the IRS, and we are way into June now.

That mean ol' Uncle Sam has to return to me what is rightfully mine. The above investigation, what with all the reasons behind it, is one reason why, if I were President, I would shut down the IRS.

Look what's happened Friday night at Fenway Park. A switch-pitcher is in the major leagues. Has this happened before? Can't say that it has. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Oakland A's righty and lefty Pat Venditte.

So Bruce Jenner is out and Caitlyn Jenner is in? This shows you what an upside-down world we live in. Now, I'm starting to get leery of former Olympic athletes. It basically comes down to this: Bruce was never happy with how he was made. He just wasn't. Not with how God had made him.

Such a disgusting scene, if you ask me.

Well, here's someone who didn't have a sex change (Thank goodness....). Kate Upton is showing off a new swimsuit yet again, this time in Canada while promoting a new movie to hit theaters this summer. This writer is all for it!

While I'm not believing it, Houston's Mike McGuff is stepping aside from full-time media blogging to go into production work. It didn't go without at least one interview. How about interviewing a legendary drummer from the rock era?

I say I don't believe it because every time he goes on some sort of hiatus, he always comes back and..............blogs!

Gotta wrap up another one folks. The old coot's got to get ready for another road trip. Keep reading, though. If my hotel computer isn't fritzed out or slow, then you can expect me to stay in touch with updates from the trip.

And there you are.

My goodness, I just did a post on switches, didn't I? We had switching job positions, switching arms, switching genders, and me switching locales.

    I'd say that that's a switch.....

Sadly, Case, I think it's the times we're living in. Parents do want their kids to succeed in life, but they want to fight for total control over their kid's(s') destiny. They want to control the outcome and not even let the teachers or administrators set the boundaries.

And that switch-pitcher Venditte ought to make for some dandy headlines, but the A's are so desperate right now. They've run out of magic and I don't see them contending anytime soon.

    How about those Astros, Case?

^^^ Just got swept by Toronto. Oh, well.

They had it won in the ninth inning today, but Gregerson blew that lead. Couldn't get his pitches where he wanted them.

By the way, I should add that '60s on 6 also includes Lou Simon, who is a wealth of knowledge of the industry as it existed in the 1960s and is a total encyclopedia. His weekend countdown show is repeated on Wednesdays. Conversely, Cousin Brucie's Wednesday "Cruisin'" show is repeated on Sundays.
