Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Astros In First Place - And Par For The Course

Posted 05-29-2015 at 10:01 AM by case44

If you tend to judge the Houston Astros by the results of the last four seasons, then this year's showing will spur the thought of "Well, now, that's more like it." Indeed, 2015 has been kind to Houston in a lot of ways. The calendar year began with fan favorite Craig Biggio being elected for baseball's Hall of Fame induction. And the team is playing better than even last year's bunch. It's a group of fine, young, and talented players proving that they belong at the big-league level.

Somewhere, owner Jim Crane just has to be smiling.

The Astros are not in last place anymore, but the American League West is not exactly performing up to expectations, either. This was going to become the league's best division, but it hasn't worked out that way. You know already about Houston's strong start, but what's everybody else done? The Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners are both lingering around .500, the Texas Rangers are schizophrenic, and Oakland's A's have just plain, flat-out been real bad. Where the Rangers are concerned about the hype surrounding Josh Hamilton's return to the team, I don't think it will have that much impact on a group that can still be good, but is not great at this point in time. Plus, the Rangers are still cursed, having gone to two World Series and coming out a loser each time. Houston, meanwhile, is poised and ready to take a giant leap. They certainly will better their 70-92 finish from last year with whatever they do this year. While the Astros aren't going to excite people with their anemic batting averages on most of their lineup guys, they are getting it done with a different player going clutch.

Yes, there is still a lot of baseball to be played in '15, but things at Minute Maid Park are looking up. Hopefully, more fans will take notice of this and head to the park in droves. They ought to. If nothing else, at least go check out Jose Altuve, fast becoming the game's premier second baseman.

Here's a link with more about this year's Astros.

First, we've got to hang on and win the AL West.

And Carlos Correa ---- get this ---- is being called up to join the Astros at US Cellular Field in Chicago tomorrow (Monday). Stay tuned; this could get interesting.
