You're not crazy for wanting to try the town out. You're not even the first person this month on this board to post something along the lines of visiting and wanting to move here.
A study last year put NOLA at #2 (behind Miami) in best cities to retire in. Best Urban Places to Retire - NerdWallet ... it cites the warm weather, a low cost of living, and services provided to the elderly as what gives us such a great spot.
I have no children and didn't grow up here so I don't know about the schools, but if you're looking for diversity and a mix of African Americans / Asians - New Orleans East comes to mind. I will say, while the city does have a large population of blacks (roughly 60%), the Asian population may be a little underwhelming to you (around 3-4%). But there are more Asians here than I've seen in any southern city I've been to. I'll also say that the city is going through gentrification, so what is said about neighborhood demographics may not hold true when you're ready to move.
A question though: you said you didn't like the craziness of the east coast? What craziness didn't you like? New Orleans is a very nutty city. I find it a little odd that you don't like craziness but you wanna move here![Smile](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
