Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Can The Astros Go Higher?

Posted 04-03-2015 at 09:22 AM by case44

It's another round of here and there which I like to call Scattershooting, and it's right here on Case's Column. Hope everyone has a happy and safe Easter weekend. Now, don't eat too much ham or you'll get real sick.

The Houston Astros are just about ready to take on a new baseball campaign, having come off a season where they made a 19-game improvement in wins over the previous season. Owner Jim Crane and general manager Jeff Luhnow are both optimistic that the team can reach .500 or better this season. With significant additions made for offense and relief pitching this past offseason, not to mention a new TV deal with Root Sports, there is reason enough to believe that said improvement would be possible. Heck, with Craig Biggio voted into Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame in January, that ought to be good karma for the 'Stros.

Play ball! The regular season begins in earnest on Sunday.

Ol' Case is finally having to clean out his closet. Literally. I've put it off long enough, and I still have things in it that used to fit in 1998. I think it's about time I tossed a few of them aside. Besides, I've got to get a new suit in time for a wedding later this month. My second cousin's wedding, not mine....

Progress continues (at least, as far as I know) on the new George Bush National College Baseball Hall of Fame Museum in Lubbock. The reason I said "as far as I know" is because the website, for some bizarre reason, does not have a section for construction pictures. Why that is, I don't know, but I've Google-searched and there are no pics of construction. But I do know that it's happening. Ground was broken last year, however, with completion slated for 2016. Below are some renderings of the actual museum.

Texans are all adjusting to a new law regarding vehicle registration. It had gone into effect last month. The gist is that a vehicle inspection sticker is no longer necessary, but you have to get your vehicle inspected first, with the info being sent to DMV records. That way, you can then go and get your registration sticker, either by mail or in person at a county tax office, as long as you pass your vehicle inspection.

Yesterday, I got my vehicle inspected and it passed. And this morning, after a rousing breakfast at the Old West Café in Denton, Texas, I immediately did a sashay over to the tax assessor's office in Denton to try to get my new sticker. Slight problem, however. I didn't realize that government offices would be closed on Good Friday.....

So I'll try again next week.

Did you know that yesterday (April 2) was National Peanut Butter And Jelly Day? Well, you do now. Here are some creative ideas on how to put those two American classics together.

Congratulations are in line for the Oak Ridge Boys, Jim Brown and the Browns, plus Grady Martin. They've just been elected for induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame for 2015 (Wow, a lot of Hall of Fame stuff today on Scattershooting...). All of them are deserving, but especially a long time coming for Jim Ed Brown, having been in country music for parts of six decades.

Here's a contact page for the College Baseball HOF if you want more info.

By the way, I heard the executive director announce today when I tuned in to Texas Tech's victory over #2 TCU. Gustafson and Robert Giovannetti do a good job with the broadcasts in Lubbock. They mentioned an inductee today, Larry Hays, a national championship winner at Lubbock Christian and the winningest head coach at Tech. (Could possibly be compared to Bill Snyder, since Tech baseball before him was really bad, but became very respectable in a few years). The current HC, Tim Tadlock, played under Hays back in the early 1990's.

Anyway, would guess that things are on track for the building.

I'll do that. At least, something's got to go onto that website.

And the Hays induction is well-deserved. He's an underrated coach.

Glad we finally settled the chicken-egg debate.

I knew it had to be a third-party issue.

Astros are off to an anemic offensive beginning to their season. I doubt Cleveland's pitching is really that good, but Houston had no excuses for losing the last two games. Opening Day may have been good, but I'm not even satisfied with the result, either.

This offense must concentrate on getting on base and manufacturing runs rather than just swinging for the fences. This team will never contend if it continues striking out (and not getting quality hits) like it did in the Cleveland series. Houston did not need to start 1-2. If they can't win the series in Arlington against the lowly Rangers, then the Astros are in serious trouble. I doubt they've convinced a lot of fans that things are different this year. They're still not.
