Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case Makes His 2015 MLB Predictions

Posted 04-01-2015 at 06:35 PM by case44

My gosh, it's that time again.

Major League Baseball and the fields of green are upon us one more time as another season is about to get underway. And before the boys of summer get their programs going, Ol' Case will be bringing you my annual predicted order of finishes for the teams, plus the expected winner of this year's World Series. Time for me to also go grab a couple of brats and a sodie pop, and get a good seat to view the action.

So, without further delay, here, now, is what I see in my crystal ball.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

East: Baltimore (98-64), Boston (97-68)*, Toronto (83-79), New York Y (77-85), Tampa Bay (68-94)

Central: Kansas City (90-72), Detroit (86-76), Chicago WS (81-81), Cleveland (79-83), Minnesota (60-102)

West: Los Angeles A (96-66), Seattle (91-71)*, Houston (82-80), Oakland (74-88), Texas (67-95)

NATIONAL LEAGUE

East: Washington (99-63), Miami (91-71)*, New York M (80-82), Atlanta (72-90), Philadelphia (69-93)

Central: St Louis (87-75), Pittsburgh (86-76), Milwaukee (82-80), Cincinnati (77-85), Chicago C (68-94)

West: Los Angeles D (97-65), San Francisco (95-67)*, San Diego (84-78), Arizona (76-86), Colorado (71-91)

* - Wild Card Entries
All-Star Winner: National League
AL Pennant: Baltimore
NL Pennant: Los Angeles D
World Champion: Baltimore

It's shaping up to be another year of surprises, but then, every year always has a few. This year will be no exception.

Around the AL: Boston will be back in contention and back in the postseason. They did just enough in the offseason to improve the team after a last-place finish. Baltimore will certainly emerge this season and will proceed to do what Kansas City did last year. The LA Angels will prove that last year was not a fluke and finish atop the West, but not before a battle with Seattle in September. Houston will be vastly improved, particularly in the bullpen, but will only have a 12-game improvement over last season. Oakland won't have near as much magic like in the past, and Texas has just run out of gas after years of contention.

Around the NL: Miami will make a run in August and September to compete with a Washington team that many expect to win it all. Speaking of which, Washington will be strong in the playoffs but will fade late. St Louis is still my pick for the Central but has a few cracks, but they remain the favorites until someone dethrones them. The Chicago Cubs may be rebuilding, but they will discover that they still have a ways to go before eventually reaching contention. In the West, look for San Francisco and the LA Dodgers to provide some September drama, battling to the wire with an improved San Diego squad not far behind.

In the end, the Baltimore Orioles will surprise a lot of skeptics and go ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers and win the 2015 World Series in seven games.

And there you are.

Well, I know some people in San Diego who would be pleased with that prediction. A few years ago, one of them referred to the Padres as the city's Triple-A team (would that have made the San Antonio Missions single-A?). Maybe there are some victories ahead for the lowly teams in MLB.

I hope you're right about Baltimore, and that might a little high. Boston's going to be storming back in a first-to-worst-to-first.

Everybody's saying that the Cards have run out of gas. I don't believe that for a second. They have a strong lineup and a good rotation. Nobody should underestimate their staying power and I think they'll be right back in the World Series again.

I might have picked Cleveland a little worse than a lot of folks would have liked (some people picked them to win the AL Central), because it is an up-and-coming team, but I just don't think Kansas City's going to let up. The White Sox will also be better, so that whole division is going to be a competitive one.

And you heard it here first: Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals will win 25 games this year. That's Cy Young material there. Just mark it down.
