A decision to move

Posted 03-28-2015 at 06:47 AM by Drey1891

Husband and I have both been nomads our whole lives. Between the two of us, we have lived in 10 cities in 8 states. So when we found ourselves in one place for 7 years, the wanderlust started to itch pretty bad. We are currently in a perfectly nice landlocked city with perfectly awful weather. The luster has worn off as Husband's job turned from cool start up to bureaucratic nightmare. I've been working nights for 4 years, and that's really starting to get old. We agreed, it's time to move on. Somewhere new and completely different. Then I bought The Sex Lives of Cannibals and the sequel Getting Stoned with Savages by J Maarten Troost as a gift to the husband for his birthday, which are quite funny and sparked some ocean yearning.

So we started searching for jobs. Applications went to jobs in New Zealand, jobs on cruise ships, telecommuting jobs, and jobs in Hawaii. A job in Kailua-Kona on the big island took my bait. We flew out for an interview, and spent 4 days in Hawaii (my only visit to the state, Husband had spent a few weeks in Hilo years before).

We came back across 5 time zones, and jet-lagged with some residual airplane quality wine on board, we decided to uproot our lives.

Now our to-do list is a mile long. No rentals to be had in Kona for 3 bedroom places (2 opposite gender kids) that are dog friendly (She's family. Nonnegotiable.) for under $2800 per month. Therefore we put an offer in to buy a house we had seen once (Husband spent one of those 4 days in HI with a realtor).

Now the list includes buying a house in HI, repairing and repainting this one, getting the dog microchipped and rabies titers drawn, getting the kids TB tests, selling the house here, transferring professional credentials to Hawaii. Get rid of half our accumulated Stuff. Also figure out job for husband: Start a consulting business? House husband? Telecommute?

And then there's the worries. Finances. Bugs. Big Flucking bugs. Potential bullying of our small Haole kids. School quality. VOG. Isolation. Uncertainty and change in general. Husband and I have been trading days to have anxiety attacks. We are not anxious people. Thankful we have not yet overlapped on the same day.

That's where we are right now, and that's why I'm on these forums, trying to figure out what the hell we're doing, and what I need to know.
