Witness the winter Symphony at Jasper National Park

Posted 03-02-2015 at 09:33 AM by info4yourlife2015

Are you ready for a change of scenery? Jasper National Park might be just the place you're looking for. With its landscapes of mountains and glaciers, incomparable wildlife, and starry skies worthy of the Arabian Nights, this Western Canada destination is a genuine national treasure. Created in 1907 and located 300 kilometres from Edmonton and 400 kilometres from Calgary, the park is among the oldest and largest protected areas in the country.

In Jasper, winter equals beauty and calm. Snow and ice turn mountains, forests, meadows, rivers and lakes into a sparkling wonderland. You can discover this national park while cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking. According to Rogier Gruys, park product development officer: “The unique trails and paths in Jasper National Park will lead you from broad valleys to gripping views of the mountain landscapes giving everyone a breathtaking experience.”

With its frozen waterfalls, surreal ice formations and frosty limestone cliffs, the Maligne canyon turns into a fairyland in winter. Take a guided hiking tour to the very heart of the canyon where thrill-seekers will have the experience of a lifetime climbing ice walls. The slopes of the Marmot Basin ski area welcome experienced downhill skiers as well as beginners. Mildred Lake and Pyramid Lake are popular places to take a break where ice skating with rental equipment is available. As well, the plentiful Athabasca River is a favourite of the most passionate ice-fishing enthusiasts.

By day, the view of majestic mountains is impressive, but after sunset, the starry sky of Jasper is likely to take your breath away – and it is, beyond question, one of the least known aspects of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“Jasper National Park is one of the largest 'dark sky' preserves in the world. Artificial light pollution is reduced to a minimum creating a memorable experience,” says Gruys, adding that Parks Canada has placed lovely red outdoor chairs in various strategic places, inviting visitors to sit down and admire the beautiful scenery by day and night.

For an overnight stay, the park offers different options. Winter camping will attract the boldest at the Wapiti or Wilcox campgrounds, but cozy hotel rooms are also available.

Don't miss the panoramic lookouts with their spectacular views while travelling on park roads. Watch out for bighorn sheep, wolves, moose and elk on the Maligne and Pyramid Lake roads and on the Icefields Parkway.
