How you can promote human rights

Turn on your television, or open a newspaper and it will not be long before you come across a news report or article of another serious human rights violation from countries across all regions of the world. Despite the implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights over 65 years ago, the current state of human rights leaves much to be desired. Abuses such as oppression, torture, discrimination, and imprisonment occur every day as innocent people are targeted based on their race, religion and sexuality. While the laws of many developing countries allow, and even promote these atrocities, we are left asking why isn't more being done to protect these individuals, and what can I do to help?
Ethical consumerism: As Canadians, we can promote human rights by researching the products we buy and places we travel. Many countries that abuse people's rights are dependent on tourism to fuel their economy. While the landscape and scenery may be enticing, you may prefer to spend your vacations and tourist dollars elsewhere.
Engage human rights organizations: There are organizations out there that promote equality and diversity, while working to expose and prevent civil rights abuses. The world's largest human rights organization, Amnesty International conducts research and generates action to prevent and stop human rights violations around the globe. The best way to connect with an organization such as Amnesty, is to visit their website to see what is going on and how you can take action.
