Preparation for the Lord's Day: God Leads Us Along

Posted 02-07-2015 at 10:01 AM by NT Fellowship

Some people think the Christian life is a bowl of cherries...a life of carefree spiritual bliss. But Jesus didn't teach that; nor did He and His apostles have lives of luxury and and ease.
George A. Young was a humble minister of the gospel. He and his family always lived on a shoestring budget; just getting by, on the grace of God.
One day when George was away, enemies of the cross burned the family home down to the ground. This was a house that George himself had built, after much scrimping and scraping.
With such an event, you might think George and his wife were discouraged. Instead, they lifted up their voices in song. George wrote the hymn (see below; it is in Public Domain) "God Leads Us Along" in response to losing his house.
The faithful couple never achieved a place of financial security. After George died, his wife lived in the poor house, as there was no other way she could manage.
The poor house was no prize of humanitarian effort. It was known as the really poor house!
Even so, Mrs. Young rejoiced. Life was exciting to her, she said, for she could spend the rest of her life introducing people to Christ!
What an example! Through poverty, persecution and loss, the George A. Youngs were thankful, victorious, and fruitful. They are an example to us, and we hope one to you, too.
God Leads Us Along
In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet,
God leads His dear children along;
Where the water’s cool flow
bathes the weary one’s feet,
God leads His dear children along.
Some through the waters,
some through the flood,
Some through the fire,
but all through the blood;
Some through great sorrow,
but God gives a song,
In the night season and all the day long.

Sometimes on the mount
where the sun shines so bright,
God leads His dear children along;
Sometimes in the valley, in darkest of night,
God leads His dear children along.
Refrain

Though sorrows befall us and evils oppose,
God leads His dear children along;
Through grace we can conquer,
defeat all our foes,
God leads His dear children along.
Refrain

Away from the mire, and away from the clay,
God leads His dear children along;
Away up in glory, eternity’s day,
God leads His dear children along.
Some through the waters,
some through the flood,
Some through the fire,
but all through the blood;
Some through great sorrow,
but God gives a song,
In the night season and all the day long.
