This blog is written from my personal experiences on why and how I successfully left the gay life. Because I knew my relationship with Christ and my sexual desires for the same sex couldn't mix, I had to make a choice.

I made that tough choice more than 20 years ago and in my heart I know it was the right choice. If someone truly wants out, it IS possible. There are many naysayers out there who will bog you down with their opinions. My belief is, if you want it bad enough you CAN change. It IS possible.

I Changed my Sexual Orientation

If you've made that first step of realizing you can't do this on your own and need Jesus to step in and take control, well done. It is only by His grace and mercy that change is truly possible.

Once you've made a choice to follow Jesus it's imperative to find a church that you fit into. My recommendation would be to search your area for non-denominational churches, check out their website, if they have online messages, watch them. While it doesn't give you the overall experience of being in the service, it may help you transition into attending church.

My reasoning for non-denominational churches is because from my experiences the churches I visited and attended were non-judgmental and very accepting. That is not to say churches such as Assemblies of God, Baptist or Evangelical Free churches would not be good. It's just that sometimes when we put a denomination behind the name of a church people can tend to feel anxious. I was raised in a very strict Irish Catholic home and absolutely hated going to church. I could not wait to be out on my own so I didn't have to go to church anymore.

When I accepted Jesus into my life and realized I needed to go to church I was very apprehensive about where to go. I was in process of moving and a friend recommended an Assemblies of God church in the area. On his recommendation I attended. It was completely opposite of the church I knew and was raised in. I truly enjoyed it for the time I lived there. As I relocated again I found a non-denominational church that was awesome. I attended many other churches until I found the one that fit me and my beliefs. While they all preached the truth about Jesus, there were enough differences in size, worship style, small groups etc. that it was important to find the right group of believers that I connected with and felt comfortable being around.

My one warning is that there are churches out there that teach that homosexuality is not wrong. They will say that because Jesus did not speak of it in the New Testament there is nothing wrong with being gay. There is now even a Bible version that has stripped all verses regarding homosexuality. I'm reminded of a verse in 2 Timothy 4:3-4 that says: the time will come when people will not listen to the true teaching but will find many more teachers who please them by saying the things they want to hear. 4 They will stop listening to the truth and will begin to follow false stories.

Remember, above all else, leaving the gay life behind is a process. It's not going to happen overnight or within a week or the moment you find a church and get connected. It will take time, but you must turn to God and let Him protect and counsel you. Whenever the desires rise up in your spirit, go to Him...and especially when you don't want to and just want to give in to them. He IS loving and gracious. He will walk with you and carry you when you need. It is only by Him that anyone can successfully leave the gay life behind.
