A New Year,A New Friend

Posted 01-01-2015 at 09:44 PM by aliasfinn

I found a cat the other night hiding next to a dumpster in an alley. It was pretty cold outside and he was all dirty and sticky so I decided to bring him home. He was scared of me and didn't like the ride in my truck but he settled down a little when I got him home. The first thing I did was give him a bath in the sink which he didn't care for at all. As I was washing him I noticed he had a lot of fresh cuts and scratches like he had just been in a fight so I dried him off and cleaned and treated his wounds. He then went around exploring every room in the house before coming back and laying down on the vent on the kitchen floor. He kept a suspicious eye on me pondering if I was going to bash his little head in. He eventually fell asleep there on that vent and I headed to bed. When I woke up I noticed he was in my doorway staring at me so I got up and gave him some leftover ham that I had in the icebox. He ate all of it and I opened the back door to see if he wanted to go out but he just walked up,took a look and went back to the vent. I think he was worried that whatever gave him those scratches might be out there somewhere. He is mostly black and has white feet so I named him Socks. I recently got a new digital scale and just out of curiosity I set him on it, he weighs 13 lbs. If I don't see anyone posting " Lost Cat " messages that fit his description I am going to make a house cat out of him. As soon as he gets over his fear of me I will take him to a vet for a check-up.

Bless you! That is a wonderful story. It would be great if there were more people in the world like you. I hope that Socks will soon settle in and start trusting you and that you'll have a happy life together.

Thanks. He is starting to trust me more already. I had to get another pillow because he took over mine. I guess he determined that my bed is where he is supposed to sleep. He has been getting into my clean laundry basket and smells like those little static sheets you throw in the dryer. He now smells too much like a dandy to go outside, other cats would beat him up so he just sits in the window giving them the finger knowing that they can't get to him. I need to borrow my neighbor's pet carrier because I have an appointment next week for him at the vets. He still has not made a sound yet, either there's something wrong with his squawk box or he's just the silent type.

It's slow going but he's learning to be civilized. He knows there will be no more dining out at five star dumpsters or hanging around with his feral buddies late at night. He's even started to like that smelly slop I've been buying him in those 79 cent cans. He does have a peculiar way of eating his Friskies though, he reaches into his bowl with his paw and spoons one out at a time and holds it down on the floor while he eats it. I imagine that's a habit he picked up when he used to eat bugs, I told him he doesn't have to do that because his Friskies aren't going to run away but old habits are hard to break. I finally heard him meow, he woke up on the sofa while I was in the basement and I guess he panicked because he didn't see me anywhere.
