Camels in the United States

Posted 12-05-2014 at 11:39 PM by aliasfinn

Camels evolved on the North American Continent millions of years ago but died out only to return in the 1800s. The US Army figured camels would fare better than horses in the American desert so they spent $30,000 in the Middle East to have 34 shipped back here. The camels performed well but the outbreak of the Civil War pretty much killed the experiment. Most of the camels were sold to zoo's and circuses but some wandered off into the desert where their sightings were reported 100 years later.
