The Marlow Brothers

In 1888 the five Marlow brothers,George,Boone,Lewellyn,Alfred and Charlie were accused of stealing horses and were arrested and jailed in Texas. Boone escaped and his four brothers were being transported to a safer jail because of lynching attempts by townspeople and crooked law enforcement officials. They were in a wagon shackled together in pairs when they were ambushed by a mob who started shooting at them. The brothers grabbed guns from the fleeing guards and returned fire, Lewellyn and Alfred were killed and George and Charlie were wounded. Three members of the mob were killed and several were wounded and George and Charlie were able to escape. Many of the mob were prosecuted and convicted for the assault. Boone was later poisoned and shot in an attempt to collect a reward but his killers were brought to trial. The movie " Sons of Katie Elder " was based on this event.
