Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I-69 Update: Another Dot Connected, Another Mile

Posted 11-23-2014 at 06:07 PM by case44

In the Interstate 69 Texas waiting game, it feels like an eternity waiting for all the dots to be connected. South Texas just got a few more I-69 miles. One is near Edinburg, and the other, just outside Corpus Christi.

After AASHTO's big announcement last week, I-69C just got an extension some four and a half miles north of its current terminus, stretching that stretch to just north of the South Texas International Airport (that's actually a cargo facility and not one for passengers). That same announcement also brought forth an additional mile to I-69E at the south end of Robstown, just past Texas State Highway 44. I'm still impatiently waiting for those same people to call for Houston. If you'll recall, it's that U.S. 59 stretch inside of Loop 610 that still awaits approval for an interstate designation, and I still don't know what the holdup is. (There is construction on the feeder roads between the Loop and Shepherd, but that's no reason to hinder or delay such a decision when the freeway is already at interstate grade.) Still, the folks in South Texas have to feel pretty good right now.

It's a slow process. Now we wait on some projects to be funded for construction or still in design, including the stretches in Laredo, Nacogdoches, Lufkin, Wharton, Victoria, Marshall, Bishop, Driscoll, Kingsville, Riviera, and a rebuilt 3 miles through Livingston. The freeway miles keep marching.

We shall see how November's vote to set aside more money for transportation infrastructure will play out this year. Hopefully, in 2015, we can see a plethora of new projects along the I-69 corridor. I'll keep an eye on it.
