hunterseat df: Hunter Seat Equitation is a division that is judged on the ability and the style of the rider. The riders can be judged both over fences and on the flat.

Although true, hunters DO eat, at least the skilled ones do, my name derives from the world of horses.

And because the word hunter is in my name, people automatically think I'm a guy. Not even close.

Whenever I meet someone named Hunter I have to bite my tongue to keep from saying "That's my name, too!"

Where seldom is heard an encouraging word

Posted 11-05-2014 at 03:31 PM by hunterseat

Do you remember singing that song as a kid? Home on the Range? My family was all about impromptu singing while riding in the car, while sitting around the kitchen table, or any time at all. We knew silly songs and verses (I Have Lost My Underwear sung to the tune of Bye Bye Blackbird) and we knew more somber songs like my favorite hymn "I’ll Fly Away".

I think it’s healthy for a child to spontaneously break into song and belt out a chorus of If You’re Happy and You Know It. Speaking of, my youngest son was forever getting in trouble at school.

Teacher: He got in trouble for singing again.
Me: What was it this time?
Teacher: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

We watched a lot of musicals. But belting out “Bless your beautiful hide!” to your Kindergarten teacher is not to be encouraged.

Sing along with me: Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam, and the deer and the antelope play, where seldom is heard a DISCOURAGING word, and the skies are not cloudy all day.

Now try to get that out of your head.

When someone is being unfairly critical towards me I often hear that line slightly twisted in my head. “Where seldom was heard, an encouraging word”. I can’t do anything to change their attitude, no matter how hard I try; they seem to find fault in everything. I tend to walk away humming rather than confront the inane. As a friend once taught me “Smile and wave!” I think that was his equivalent to walking away humming.

I can hear the negative voices from my past telling me I’m not good enough. But I don’t listen. Instead, I tune in to the encouragement channel in my head. What prompted me to write about this is as silly as a chorus of ”I have lost my underwear “(I don’t care, I’ll go bare. Bye bye long johns)… now I’ll be singing THAT all day. Brushing my teeth. That’s when I hear it. One time I was at the dentist – which I used to enjoy until a Navy dentist ruined me. It was during a dental exam when I heard the words “You do a great job brushing your teeth!” I can’t remember where I was nor how old, but I remember those words. And I think about that frequently as I brush. Is that crazy? Maybe but it’s a clear illustration of how a kind or positive word can affect someone for the rest of their life.

I read about a teacher who handed each student a list of their classmates’ names. She instructed them to write something positive about each person on the list. Once she collected them, she compiled a list for each student of all the positive things that were said about them and handed them out. What a beautiful thing. Some of those kids kept the lists with them long after they were grown. When they felt down they would pull the list out and read all the positive things that were said about them. Instead of humming “..where seldom is heard an encouraging word” I’d rather take out a list of nice things people said about me.

I make it a point to pass on compliments about other people when I hear them. We are criticized far too frequently and complimented far too seldom. "Good job!" goes a long ways. And I never shy away from speaking a kind word or simply smiling to people, no matter who they are.

So are your words more frequently encouraging or discouraging? More importantly, does your family spontaneously break into song? I think there might be a connection!
