Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

A Very Strange Dream......About Roaches

Very recently, we had a few roaches managing to sneak their way into my work area at the office. I'm amazed at how people can't simply just step on a roach just to get rid of it. Heck, even one co-worker decided to actually pick it up with her hands and quickly open the emergency exit and let it down on the ground.

And I thought our federal government was bad.

So, not too long ago, I had a dream about what it'd be like just to find an unconventional way to dispose of a roach. My outrageous dream ---- and, yes, it was outrageous ----- was the image of me using a flyswatter to swat the roach. And then I would pick up the roach to show everyone. And then......

........I would take that roach and pop it in my mouth and eat it!

Okay, now that I've ruined your breakfusses, lunches, dunches, luppers, and suppers, I know you can only imagine the stunned looks on my co-workers' faces. It'd make a great movie. Besides, what goes great with roaches? Salsa? I guess with that kind of a dream, I haven't paid it a second thought. One cohort said, "Well, Case, that's a living thing. You wouldn't want to kill that." Folks, it's an insect. It's a pest. We can kill bugs, and that includes roaches, the last time I checked.

At this stage of the game, I'm content with doing things the old-fashioned way, even on new carpet, and that's to step on said roach.

Your move.

I think that your comment about the Federal Government is quite telling!

Note: I am passing NO judgment on political views, left & right, right & wrong...in fact I would have killed the roach too, so no judgment. Just hear me out:

Dreams speak in metaphors. You had noticed a similarity between someone who chose to treat the roach (a disgusting thing who enters our spaces & live off our waste) with compassion by picking it up to HELP it to a better place. Your co-worker diverted her work TIME & RESOURCES to SPEND this time ("time is money") doing this for the roach.

Your association to this was how the fed. govt. does the same thing, and you don't generally agree with it ("...and I thought the federal government was bad!")

So your dream manifested your own version to how you'd rather see government resources being spent...i.e., not spend so much time rehabbing the homeless, welfare, or unemployment insurance, or whatever, and rather see them take care of themselves, darwinian-style "eat or be eaten". kinda thing.

    Thoughts?

My dream was actually based on a real happening at work, and then taken to an extreme by me. Our government had nothing to do with that at all. Just some crazy things at work.

The fact that you were put off by your co-worker's kindness to another living creature just shows the less than compassionate or understanding of species that inhabit this earth that most humans think are less than equal or worthy as they are be they four, six, eight, or even of two legs but of different race, creed, or orientation. This is further demonstrated by your comic attempt to get rid of the roach by first stepping on him, then crushing him, and if that were not enough, then devouring him. Unfortunately this is the mindset of many who now occupy the human race. Unfortunately many have the capability to do just that to those they feel are not equal to them for some unintelligent absurdity. Often dreams are a key to many things that are troubling the inner core of our primary purpose for existence. That is to recognize all living things plant and animal insect and marine life as sacred and to be protected. They all serve a purpose in our ecosystem. We may not understand it all or recognize their importance yet but the bug you squash today may be the insect that could have saved your life or even this planet tomorrow. If we don't stop and start preserving what we have we will all perish.

Then again, I've never seen a bug or a roach actually save anyone's life.
