hunterseat df: Hunter Seat Equitation is a division that is judged on the ability and the style of the rider. The riders can be judged both over fences and on the flat.

Although true, hunters DO eat, at least the skilled ones do, my name derives from the world of horses.

And because the word hunter is in my name, people automatically think I'm a guy. Not even close.

Whenever I meet someone named Hunter I have to bite my tongue to keep from saying "That's my name, too!"

Can You Hear Me Now?

Posted 09-23-2014 at 10:01 AM by hunterseat

Yesterday I was walking my dogs in the park and as two people passed, the lady spoke to me. I wanted to say “You’ve got the prettiest voice!” I didn’t say that. It would have sounded strange, wouldn’t it? I wonder if anyone ever said that to her? I wonder if she knows it. It occurred to me she might be a radio personality. If not she should be. But it got me thinking about voices.

Do you like the sound of your own voice? I’m okay with mine,as long as I hear it from inside my head while I’m speaking. But when I’m an external listener and I hear my voice, like trying to get my voice mail message recorded? I’m sorry, but that does not sound like me. It’s like hearing your voice in a mirror, ya know? It’s backwards. But that’s how you sound to everyone except yourself. And those who love you, love to hear your voice. When they talk to you on the phone they probably picture your face. I do that when I speak to the love of my life. He smiles a lot. I can hear him smiling. I love that.

There are people in my past that I’ve lost track of but I can still “hear their voice”. People I like. Whether or not they still sound like they did in high school remains a mystery. But our loved ones? You might close your eyes and listen “in your mind’s ear” to the voices of your parents, children, siblings, spouse. I wonder. If we made a list of those people and went down the list and tried, would we still hear their voices? There might be an expression they always used, or the way they laughed that comes back to us.

Back in Bible times, the shepherds had to drive their flocks to wherever the grass was growing. Because predators came out at night, therewould be a “keep”, or a safe containment area and they would put their flocks in there. All together. Many shepherds and lots of sheep. The next morning a shepherd would call to his sheep. His sheep would recognize his voice and follow him. Sorting them out was never a problem. Sheep are supposed to be stupid but apparently they’re good followers. You know what the shepherd did when the sheep wandered off repeatedly? Break one of its legs, then carry it on his shoulders until it healed. The sheep learned to depend on the shepherd and, once healed it never strayed again. (Let’s hope that occurred before the sheep got too big or there’d be mutton stew for dinner if I was the shepherd.) But can you imagine, finishing up their coffee, throwing sand on the fire and striking out for a new day. I imagine all the sheep pouring out of the pen and the shepherds heading off in different directions, calling the sheep. I picture the giant flock breaking off into sub-set flocks. Maybe the sheep called to each other in sheep voices to have a good day or that they’d see them again some night. That’s probably giving the sheep way too much credit.

My mom thought siblings could achieve a much closer harmony when singing. Maybe because their voices are so similar, they blend better? There are plenty of singing groups that prove this theory.

Voices are funny things. I wonder if they’re like fingerprints. They seem to be as much a part of our physical make-up as our skin-hair-eye color, height, shoe size. But they’re not exactly physical are they? But they are kind of unique to us. It’s something that people love about us….or not. Will our children remember the sound of our yelling? Will our friends hear our cursing? Will our parents hear the sarcasm in our voices? How will we sound when others close their eyes and hear our voices? That might be something to think about the next time we speak.
