Playing Bridge Online

Posted 08-26-2014 at 06:34 PM by Rubi3

I regularly play bridge online as well as locally. It's open 24 hours a day with players from all over the world. One person who is often my partner is a man in Egypt. We've played partners for about 2 years. I know very little about him other than he and I play a similar game and once when he was online more than usual he said his wife was in another country awaiting the birth of their newest child.

One thing players do online that would rarely happen in person is they will leave if something goes wrong. I consider them big babies. Sometimes if a partner makes a disastrous bid, the partner will leave. It's also the mark of a poor player in my opinion. There are players from a certain country who seem to be more rude than anyone else. One player at each table is the host and the host has the ability to boot a player out of the room. I've been booted a few times, usually because the host is an opponent and doesn't like something I did, such as defeat his bid. It doesn't happen often, but it happens.

There are different levels of players. Novice, beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert, world class. I rank myself intermediate. It seems to me the players who rank themselves advanced are the ones most likely to be poor sports.

It's not unusual to have a table where the players are all very nice. They play reasonably well and are friendly. They can be from Bangladesh, South Africa, Singapore or Argentina. Sometimes, I'm surprised to see a country listed that I've rarely heard of.

Oh well, just sitting here thinking. About to read some more in this book started yesterday, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Have you read it? It says it was on the NYT best seller list.
