Westburys' Perspective

Posted 08-18-2014 at 09:51 AM by hhendricks

Men of all races should have conversations with their sons, as well as daughters more frequently. Consider the conversation as a pulse check on their moral character. The situation in Ferguson Mo., prompted another sit down with my son, just to see what his perspective is on the situation. I am proud to say that he exhibits almost the same sentiments I have. With that said, I am surprise at some of my co workers response to the situation. In what situation is it ok to kill a child? Whether or not he is armed, Regardless of a child's bad behavior, should the ultimate penalty be death? I am sick of interjecting race into conversation, because the basic principles of fairness, what's right and what's wrong should transcend all culture. I have many disappointments regarding the situation in Ferguson, the looting is totally unacceptable. One population of Ferguson is at 67% and the other 20 % and finally 3%, the main disappointment I have is the fact that the majority of the 20% supports the accused officer. The only 2 questions I have for those holding up support signs for this officer is: If your child made a bad decision and was gunned down like an animal in the middle of the street, would you still elevate signs supporting the accused individual? and how would you feel seeing people holding up support signs supporting the accused? We should all be equally disgusted and outraged by the events, but even more by the manner in which this child was killed. We execute mass murderers more humanely than how this kid was killed.

Wow, I saw a sprinkle of the 20% walking in the protest shoulder to shoulder with their neighbors in Ferguson. I am relieved to see some have fought against their fear and decided to walk with their neighbors. Despite the imperfect conditions under which our nation was born, it is our duty to make this country the greatest republic in human history. We owe this duty not only to those who sacrificed their lives in the past for what we have today, but we also owe this duty to our children who will replace us in the future.
