What Direction do You Prefer to Go?

" Actually, the trouble with our institutions is that they are, on the whole, are too enlightened and civilized to hold their own in a social environment that is becoming increasingly primitive and savage." Eric Hoffer wrote this 50 years ago and it is even more true today. Jefferson in his time grumbled about the many who were so far behind in their understanding of what was happening and what needed to happen that it made it difficult to govern. At church we have been studying Cor. 1 & 2 and there we saw a clash of culture and understanding. Some wanted to go backward and some wanted to stay right where they were and still others wanted to move forward. This is a kind of tension that writers could help with and build bridges of understanding and trust. But to be realistic writers are just as guilty of maintaining schism as any faction of society, maybe more so.

Imagining that I have unwittingly descended on a downward spiral. upon my realization of this, I would have myself upward bound; along that same path. If a man is savage, oughtn't we reserve our condemnation as with any other beast? If a human being is wise and true, that one is welcome into my company. I would be honored to have them set the pace of our assent. Were they to suggest an alternative direction, I would deny their greed without a second thought, as they've already walked a mile on my inch. I have a decent measure of goodwill, but there are limits. One does not reshape my desired path, besides, what could be better than a spiral? Perhaps I'd allow another to determine the color of my spiral. I will entertain a second thought in this matter, I'd probably be wise to limit this choice to shade. I pick my own damn colors. If that's not enough, I say to hell with savage and man alike. What was I saying about goodwill?
