Radio call-in shows

When the 1980s arrived and television was swirling around in the toilet bowl I discovered a new source of entertainment, radio call-in shows. Certain local ones were my favorite, I became addicted to them and would always make sure I was by a radio when they came on. They would have a three second time delay so they could cut off any death threats or profanity from the callers which led to confusion by ones calling in for the first time. Here would be an example of one of those calls;
HOST " We have Elmer on the air now "
ELMER " Hello "
HOST " Hello Sir you're on the air "
ELMER " Hello "
HOST " Turn your radio down sir "
ELMER ( PAUSE)
HOST " Sir,please turn your radio down "
ELMER " Is this me? "
HOST " How the Hell should I know? "
ELMER " Hello "
HOST " Goodbye "
HOST " Folks, you have to turn your radio down because we are on a three second delay. "
It was usually the same dozen people that called every show. I started out just listening but after a while I thought, " I have to get in on this. " I liked to call in using different voices so the host wouldn't know he was talking to the same person. Most of the usual callers would talk about the same thing everyday which would tend to get boring but there was always a caller that provided humor or interest to the show. I think the internet pretty much sucked the popularity from the radio call-in shows but there are still a few of them going strong. I seldom listen to the radio these days but they were entertaining.
