Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Singing Songs While Putting Up The Flag At Work

Posted 02-05-2009 at 02:45 PM by case44

Recently, I was appointed by my dispatch manager (pushed into it?) to be the new guy who puts up the flags first thing in the morning. And so, I have taken that challenge on, but after a few days, it's really no challenge. It is, however, a patriot's proud duty and I heartily accept. But something has come over me as I put flags up each day, and especially this morning. I was singing two different songs as I was raising the flags by winding the pulleys. One was "Up, Up, And Away", which the Fifth Dimension did years ago, and "Spinning Wheel", the song Blood, Sweat, and Tears made famous. The reason for my Spinning Wheel thought: the first few words, "What goes up must come down...." The other song talked simply about flying in a balloon. I couldn't help it today, and those songs were just on my mind.

I just thought of some other wild titles that can be associated with raising the flag at the flagpoles, even if only a few of the lyrics are remotely related. Here's a list below.

You Raise Me Up - Josh Groban
Fly Me To The Moon - Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett
Fly Away - John Denver
Five Feet High And Rising - Johnny Cash
Your Love Has Lifted Me Higher - Rita Coolidge or Otis Redding

And I could even think of one instrumental.

Wave - Antonio Carlos Jobim

I'm sure I'll have a few others along the way, but those are just off the top of my head. Don't ask me why I sometimes sing things on the spur of the moment. I do that constantly, but my singing voice isn't that great (the voice cracks at an octave and a half). Still, when I am in a good mood, I like to have some good, clean fun. Just something I happened to think about on one chilly morning in Texas while raising three flags to start the work day.

It's amazing how anyone can come up with songs right at the very moment you're doing something and have it relate to your daily activity. That's some funny stuff.

Just one thing: Are you still putting up the flags today, and if so, how's that going?
