Copper the BBC Series

Posted 06-29-2014 at 07:27 PM by Fortoggie

This week I have been watching Copper, the T V series set in New York City in 1864 and 1865, in many ways NY was a hell town in that period of history and the fact that the civil war was going on made it all the more so.
There are many criticisms I could offer about the way the story was told [ and I may get back to that in another blog ] but for now I want to say what I think was right. Most of the main characters were Irish immigrants and while they were far from likable on a person to person basis they did have enough sense to stick together for their common survival. They worked together and watched each others back and passed on important information to each other.
My own history is Irish and Scottish but my ancestors came into Virginia and traveled south west and it was every man for himself. Most of us came on credit and we never got out from under the thumb of the land owners. In some way the powers that be understood that we needed to function as individuals and never as a group. Their ministers taught my ancestors that they should trust in God and that if God didn't provide then it meant that that's the way God intended it to be.
Looking back I can see that if my dad and his dad had of found other people that had a common history and similar needs they could have pooled their thinking and built strength through numbers. Working it just right they could have sped up their progress ten fold.
Even now I am going to guess that you pretty much are trying to make it alone, if you have friends it is probably to chew the fat and discuss the latest football game. At work and in your profession you are going it alone still hoping to pull yourself up by your bootstraps.
This week a lot is being said about freedom and when our life is almost over we want to sing, "I did it my way." Instead when we have finished the course we need to say WE did it OUR way and we all would be further ahead.
